I possess a natural empathy and a desire to help people; whether that is to help ease the pain of chronic tension, to soothe the muscles following over-exertion or simply to relax and take away anxiety. I treat people holistically and as individuals

Reiki

Reiki is an ancient healing system first developed in Japan by Dr. Mikao Usui around 1920. Translated from Japanese it means: Universal Life Energy, Rei meaning God or light, the source of all life and Ki meaning the life that animates all that is. It is the fundamental life force we require on all levels- physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually, to balance our health in all areas. It has no religious affiliation nor is it based on dogma or faith; it is simply based on belief that the human body and the human mind is not all that there is.

The five principles of Reiki:

Just for today:

  • Do not be angry
  • Do not worry
  • Be grateful
  • Work with appreciation
  • Be kind to all living things
It is balancing for the whole person, creates a feeling of well-being and accelerates the body’s self-healing abilities.

Reiki is based on respect and trust and is passed down from master to student through a series of attunements that descend through a direct lineage from Dr. Usui himself. Though with the increased popularity of Reiki there have been schools that have branched out and cannot show a direct lineage. My lineage can be traced directly through 8 masters back to Dr. Usui.

In Reiki healing, illness is seen as a lack of balance in the energy system or a separation from the oneness of creation. This separation is enhanced by the Western tradition of always looking outside ourselves for comfort and for love when the reality is that if we look inside we will find all that we need.

During a treatment the client remains fully clothed and is asked to close their eyes and breath deeply. Reiki is directed by the healer, through the palms of their hands using very gentle touch in some places, and no touch at all in others. The treatment is deeply relaxing and some clients experience a feeling of heat (or cold) penetrating their body, seeing colours or other visual images, some may have involuntary twitches as blockages are released and some clients experience other methods of release such as laughing or crying as the emotions they have been holding on to are let go. Blockages in our energetic field can be caused by any kind of worry or tension, from pain we have experienced in the past and haven’t let go of, or pain we are currently experiencing. These blockages can manifest themselves in illness or dis-ease, a lack of continuity and balance in our bodies, minds and spirits.

Reiki can be used to treat pretty much any disorder, including:

  • Stress reduction, depression, anxiety
  • Emotional balancing, self-esteem, mental clarity
  • Fatigue, problems sleeping
  • Pain reduction or elimination,
  • Making or handling changes in your life
  • Relationship problems
  • Trauma, grief
  • Sexual/physical/emotional abuse
  • Living with chronic conditions
  • Arthritis, Migraines, Asthma, Skin conditions, Flu/Colds, Back problems,

It is balancing for the whole person, creates a feeling of well-being and accelerates the body’s self-healing abilities. It can be used alongside conventional medicine to speed up the healing process and decrease anxiety.

As Reiki is used by the body, without direction, and where it is needed the most, results can sometimes be surprising. For example, a client with a headache who receives Reiki may find that they feel depressed and withdrawn for a few days, this may not be what the client wants, but actually the body feeling as though it can let go- the vital energy of Reiki has given it some breathing space from the stress of everyday life. The headache is just a sign that the body needs to rest and withdraw from the world and of course if the client acts on this the headache will also go away and balance will be restored.

Having been a massage therapist for many years, I have no doubt that there is more to human life than the mechanics of our bodies, which science, as the current leading doctrine has convinced us it is. In the modern world, if we have an illness we go to a doctor and they try to understand in a physical way what has gone wrong and how it can be fixed. But science cannot account for emotions and the less physical side of our being, which can, without doubt, affect the balance of our bodies and cause physical problems. Neck pain is a great example; I have studied body symbolism a great deal and often think about what a client’s pain may be indicating. Neck pain is often an emotional blockage, a holding back of feelings, leaving them unexpressed. The little knots, which cause the pain and the restriction of movement are like little worries and anxieties preventing us from holding our head up high, free from pain and facing the world with pride and truth. Getting rid of the knots will help, but unless the deeper issue is dealt with, they will always return.

Reiki is a way of connecting with the deeper issues in our life, which inhibit our development and hold us back from being and achieving everything we want. It helps to unblock the chakra system directly and heals on all levels. Though it is in no way a replacement for medical attention, it is a fantastic complementary therapy in all cases of disharmony, be it minor first aid or long-standing medical, emotional or mental problems.
